Runway, the AI creative tools company, has unveiled Gen-4, a generative video model that represents a major leap in AI-produced video quality. The model generates clips up to 60 seconds long at 4K resolution with a level of visual fidelity that approaches professional cinematography.

Gen-4's standout feature is Director Mode, which gives creators granular control over camera movement, lighting, and scene composition through natural language instructions. Users can specify tracking shots, dolly zooms, rack focus, and other cinematic techniques, with the AI executing them with surprising accuracy. Early access users in the filmmaking community have described the results as "indistinguishable from B-roll footage."

Character consistency across scenes — critical for narrative content — is dramatically improved. Gen-4 can maintain a character's appearance, clothing, and mannerisms across multiple generated clips, enabling creators to produce short films and advertisements with persistent characters for the first time. The feature works by creating an internal character model from reference images or text descriptions.

Runway has also introduced a collaborative workspace that allows teams to share projects, maintain asset libraries, and build on each other's generations. Integration with popular editing software including Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro is available through plugins.
