Runway has released Gen-4, its most advanced video generation model, capable of producing footage that approaches the quality of professionally shot cinema. The model supports resolutions up to 4K, frame rates up to 60fps, and durations of up to 60 seconds per generation.
Gen-4 introduces Runway's Director Mode, which gives creators precise control over camera movement, lens selection, depth of field, and lighting direction through natural language instructions. Users can specify shots like "slow dolly forward, shallow depth of field, warm golden hour lighting" and receive results that match professional cinematographic standards.
Character consistency has been a major focus of Gen-4. The model can maintain a character's appearance across multiple generated clips, enabling creators to produce short narratives with consistent actors. Runway achieves this through a character locking system where users provide a reference image or description that anchors the character throughout generation.
The model also excels at physics simulation, correctly handling reflections, shadows, fluid dynamics, and object interactions. Runway demonstrated the system generating a clip of rain falling on a glass table with accurate refraction, reflection, and splash dynamics — a task that would challenge even professional VFX artists.
Gen-4 is available to all Runway subscribers starting at $12/month for the Standard plan. Professional and Enterprise plans offer higher resolution output, longer generation times, and priority processing. Runway has also launched a marketplace where creators can share and sell custom styles and presets.
