Anysphere, the company behind the AI-first code editor Cursor, announced today that the product has crossed 5 million users worldwide. The milestone comes roughly 18 months after Cursor's public launch and underscores the rapid adoption of AI-native development environments.
Alongside the user milestone, Cursor is shipping its largest update to date. The new release includes an overhauled agent mode that can autonomously create, edit, and test code across entire projects. The agent can now handle multi-file refactors, write and run tests, and iterate on errors — all within a single conversation context.
Cursor's growth has been particularly strong among professional developers. The company reports that over 40% of Fortune 500 tech teams now have at least one Cursor license, and enterprise revenue has grown 8x year-over-year. The product's appeal lies in its ability to understand entire codebases through its context engine, which indexes repositories and understands project architecture.
The update also brings Cursor's "Shadow Workspace" feature to general availability. Shadow Workspace allows the AI to make changes in an isolated environment, run tests, and only apply modifications to the user's working tree once they pass. This addresses a key concern among professional developers about AI making unwanted changes to production code.
