Transfer learning is a machine learning technique where a model trained on a large general dataset is adapted to perform well on a different, often more specific task, leveraging the knowledge already learned to achieve better results with less data and training time.

How Transfer Learning Works

Instead of training a model from scratch for every new task, transfer learning allows practitioners to start with a model that has already learned useful patterns from a large dataset. For example, a vision model trained on millions of images already understands edges, textures, and shapes — this knowledge transfers well to specialized tasks like medical imaging. In NLP, models pre-trained on vast text corpora can be fine-tuned for specific applications like sentiment analysis or legal document classification. Transfer learning is the foundation of modern AI, as almost all state-of-the-art models are pre-trained and then adapted for downstream tasks.
