AI Glossary/AI Agent

What Is AI Agent?

Definition

An AI agent is an autonomous artificial intelligence system that can perceive its environment, make decisions, plan multi-step actions, and execute tasks to achieve specific goals with minimal human oversight.

How AI Agent Works

Unlike a standard AI chatbot that simply responds to one question at a time, an AI agent can break down complex goals into sub-tasks, use tools and APIs, browse the web, write and execute code, and iterate on its approach based on results. Agents maintain a loop of observation, planning, action, and reflection. For example, a coding agent like Devin can receive a feature request, read the codebase, write code, run tests, debug failures, and submit a pull request — all autonomously. AI agents represent the shift from AI as a tool you use to AI as a worker that acts on your behalf.
